Woodlands was one of Perth's original northern suburbs, developed from 1964 when Huntriss Road went through and homes went up on fifth-acre blocks. Most of the housing is still 1960s and 1970s double brick and brick veneer with timber roof framing, though the Floreat Lakes Estate added a newer pocket in the 1990s and two-storey rebuilds are now common on the larger blocks. The ground is Spearwood dune sand over limestone, with the low interdunal wetland at Jackadder Lake in the middle. Jackadder Lake, first recorded as Mews Lake in 1831, is a year-round wetland with a nesting island, reed beds and a healthy population of waterbirds, frogs, rats and mosquitoes.
