Noranda is a late 1970s and 1980s suburb, laid out around Benara Road and Widgee Road with the streets north of Widgee Road only moving into the City of Bayswater in 2016. The homes are typically single-storey double brick with tiled roofs on timber framing, on the large blocks of that era, with a growing number of two-storey rebuilds and subdivisions. The ground is Bassendean dune system, old grey sand that is acidic, low in nutrients and holds a shallow water table in the low spots. It drains fast on the rises, which means heavy garden irrigation, and irrigated beds against forty-year-old brickwork with timber framing above is what subterranean termites look for. Roof timbers from this era are now at the age where undetected activity becomes structural.
Lightning Swamp Bushland is the defining feature: 70 hectares of A-class reserve between Malaga Drive and Reid Highway with flooded gum and paperbark wetlands, banksia woodland, three seasonal water bodies and a perched wetland on peaty clay that stays damp all year. It is superb habitat for frogs and black cockatoos, and also for mosquitoes, rats and native bush cockroaches that move into the streets off Matthews Close and along the reserve edge. Hawaiian's Noranda, Lightning Park Recreation Centre and the new Noranda Station on the Ellenbrook Line add commercial waste and construction disturbance.
