The name was adopted in 1974 for a planned suburb that went up through the late 1970s and 1980s south of Hodges Drive, around Ocean Reef Primary and Ocean Reef Senior High School. That housing is double brick and brick veneer with timber roof framing, now approaching or past forty years old. North of Hodges Drive the Beaumaris precinct, around Beaumaris Park and Beaumaris Primary School, was built mostly in the 1990s on slab-on-ground with more steel framing. The whole suburb sits on yellow sand over Tamala limestone, rising from the Quindalup dune at the coast, and the limestone is shallow enough on the ridge that a chemical termite management system usually goes in by drilling and injecting rather than trenching.
The protected dune reserve between the houses and the ocean is the biggest single influence on pest pressure in Ocean Reef. It is year-round habitat for rats, black house spiders and native cockroaches, all of which move into the ocean-facing streets as the weather cools, and the coastal walkway and cycle path along its edge brings them right to the back fence. The Ocean Reef Boat Harbour precinct at the end of Hodges Drive, now being rebuilt into the Ocean Reef Marina, adds construction disturbance that pushes rodents into neighbouring streets. Coastal brown ants sit under paving and limestone retaining walls across both halves of the suburb, and sea-breeze evenings in November carry termite alates inland from the reserve.
