Daglish was laid out in the 1920s on garden suburb principles: large lots, curved streets, plenty of reserve, and a station opened in 1924 at its heart. The first homes near the station are Inter-War Californian Bungalows, with later houses and some flats filling in to the mid-1940s. Most originals are brick or weatherboard on timber stumps with jarrah floors, timber roof framing and timber verandahs, and the City of Subiaco's Daglish Conservation Area, declared in 2003, means they are retained rather than replaced. The ground is Spearwood dune: brown sand over yellow subsoil, with Tamala limestone below. Timber in contact with that soil, plus subfloors with poor ventilation, is what subterranean termites look for.
The green space that makes Daglish pleasant also feeds its pest pressure. Cliff Sadlier VC Memorial Park was built as a water compensation basin, so it holds moisture, and Charles Stokes Reserve, Daglish Park, Hickey Avenue Park and McCallum Park provide continuous harbourage for rats, spiders and native cockroaches.
