Most of West Leederville's residential land was subdivided before 1903 and the suburb was largely built by 1925, so its streets are dominated by Federation and inter-war housing: brick and weatherboard cottages on stumps with jarrah floors, timber roof framing and iron or tile roofs, many now renovated and extended. The 1990s Hill of Tara subdivision added larger two-storey homes on big sloping blocks with views over Galup. Cambridge Street carries a strip of shops and older commercial buildings, with the Leederville Town Hall of 1916 at its centre. The ground is Spearwood sand over limestone on the rise and lower, wetter sand towards the lake, which changes how termites and ants behave from one street to the next.
