Kiara grew out of the 240 acres the State Housing Commission bought in 1969 to build Lockridge and Kiara through the 1970s. The original stock is single-storey brick and tile on slab or low footings, with timber roof framing, timber fascias and simple pergolas, and a lot of it has since been extended, re-roofed or sold and renovated, with a late-1990s renewal program reshaping the Lockridge side. Blocks are generous and many still have the original sheds, fibro outbuildings and mature trees. The ground is Bassendean sand, flat and grey with a shallow winter water table, in the catchment that drains east to Bennett Brook. Termites move through it easily, and the age of the timber framing is now the main risk.
Kiara sits inside the Bennett Brook catchment with Altone Park and the Beechboro reserves across Benara Road to the north and the Lockridge and Eden Hill greenways to the east and south. Those corridors keep rats, spiders and native cockroaches moving through the back fences, and the brook wetlands to the north-east breed mosquitoes every spring. Benara Road, Beechboro Road North, Lord Street and Morley Drive frame the suburb.
