Doubleview was subdivided in 1910 but only filled in after the Second World War, when the State built timber-framed homes for returned soldiers in the northern streets. Brick and tile followed through the 1950s and 1960s, and the southern streets near Wembley Downs have some of the best mid-century houses in Perth. Under all of it is the Spearwood dune system, yellow Karrakatta sand over Tamala limestone, which is why the water tower on Princess Street stands where it does. That combination of old timber framing, original hardwood floors and limestone pockets that hold summer moisture makes Doubleview one of the more active termite suburbs in the City of Stirling.
The suburb is now redeveloping fast. Post-war blocks on Sackville Terrace and around Bradley Reserve are being split into two or three slab-on-ground homes, and every one of those sites disturbs the ground and pushes ants, spiders and rodents into the neighbours. Bradley Reserve, Munro Reserve and Bennett Park keep a bush-edge population of rats, and the older retail strips on Scarborough Beach Road and Sackville Terrace add cockroaches from bins and drains.
