Mindarie was formally established in 1988 around the Mindarie Marina, and most of its housing followed through the 1990s and 2000s as the Mindarie Keys estate filled in behind Anchorage Drive, Bellport Parade and Ocean Falls Boulevard. That means double brick on concrete slabs, tiled roofs on timber or steel framing, and a lot of two-storey homes with balconies, cavity walls and alfresco areas hard up against the slab. The ground is young white Quindalup dune sand near the water and shallow sand over Tamala limestone behind it; the suburb was quarried for lime in the early 1900s and the restored kilns at Coopers Park are the reminder. Limestone close to the surface holds moisture in pockets, which subterranean termites use through summer, and it means most chemical termite systems here are drilled and injected rather than trenched.
The bush is never far away. Tamala Conservation Park runs along the southern boundary, 408 hectares of coastal dune and heath with active Quindalup dunes and older Spearwood dunes, and the North and South Mindarie foreshores protect the dune strip along Claytons Beach. That is prime habitat for rodents, native cockroaches and spiders, and the homes backing onto the reserve carry more of each. The marina precinct, with its restaurants and boardwalk, keeps rats well fed year-round, and salt air corrodes the metal mesh and flashings that are supposed to keep them out. We treat the bush and marina edges as higher-pressure zones and set rodent proofing and perimeter work up accordingly, using APVMA-registered products applied to label.
