Alkimos barely existed before 2008, when Marmion Avenue was extended through it. Since then the Alkimos Beach, Trinity and Shorehaven estates have filled the ground between the ocean and the Mitchell Freeway, which reached Romeo Road in 2023, and the railway station opened in July 2024. The housing is uniformly new: double brick on concrete slab, steel or timber roof framing, small lots with paved side access and alfresco slabs. Every home was built with a termite system, and every home that has since added a patio, paving or a raised garden bed against the brickwork has a system that may now be bridged. The ground is white Quindalup dune sand on the coast and yellow Spearwood sand over Tamala limestone inland, both warm and free-draining and both ideal for coastal brown ants.
What sets Alkimos apart is how much bush is still here. Before development the land was banksia, sheoak and grasstree scrub on the Swan Coastal Plain, and large pieces of it remain: Neerabup National Park along the northern boundary, retained bushland through Trinity including the Kells Park bush trail, and the foreshore dunes along Shorehaven Beach. Termite colonies, rodents, native cockroaches and spiders that lived in that bush now share a fence with the new streets along Santorini Promenade and Hawksbill Drive. We treat bush-edge homes as high-pressure sites: rodent stations on the reserve side, thorough perimeters around the slab and penetrations, and an honest conversation about what the builder's termite system is still doing, using APVMA-registered products applied to label.
