Iluka was developed through the 1990s and 2000s between Burns Beach Road, Shenton Avenue and the ocean, with O'Mara Boulevard as its spine. The homes are large slab-on-ground builds, many two-storey, with rendered walls, steel or treated-pine roof framing, alfresco areas and paving to every boundary. The ground is Quindalup coastal sand along the foreshore streets and shallow yellow sand over Tamala limestone further inland, which is why so much of the suburb is built on limestone retaining walls. Every home carried a termite management system to AS 3660.2 from construction, but retaining walls and paving laid against the brickwork bridge it, and limestone close to the surface means any replacement system is drilled and injected rather than trenched.
The Iluka Foreshore Reserve runs the length of the suburb's coast, a strip of consolidated limestone dune and coastal heath between Burns Beach and the Ocean Reef marina. That bush is the source of redbacks, black house spiders and native cockroaches, and the lake in Sir James McCusker Park off Moonflight Crescent adds mosquitoes on still evenings. Salt air corrodes the galvanised mesh and flashings that keep rodents out of roof spaces, so proofing here needs stainless or aluminium. The sea breeze pushes termite alates and flying ants inland on November nights.
