Hamersley was built under the state government's Hamersley Development Scheme from 1968, with the first land auctioned that December and the suburb essentially complete by 1981. It was one of the first Perth suburbs planned around cul-de-sacs, and the housing is overwhelmingly detached double brick and brick veneer with tiled roofs on timber framing, now 45 to 55 years old, almost half of it four bedrooms or more. The soil is Karrakatta sand, an infertile yellow-brown quartz sand over Tamala limestone, free-draining and warm. That combination of half-century-old timber framing, limestone at depth and mature gardens hard against the brickwork makes Hamersley an annual termite inspection suburb.
Before development the ground carried jarrah, marri, banksia and sheoak, and remnants survive in Rannoch-Tay-Earn Reserve and Aintree-Eglinton Reserve, plus the large exclusion zone around the ABC radio towers that takes up a seventh of the suburb. Those pockets of bush and long grass supply the rats, native cockroaches and spiders that the surrounding cul-de-sacs see each autumn. Erindale Road bisects the suburb, Warwick Grove shopping centre sits on the Beach Road boundary, and Reid Highway and the Mitchell Freeway carry constant traffic along the south and west.
