The name comes from a Noongar word for the swamp's shifting water, and the swamp still runs the suburb. Lake Gwelup Reserve is 75 hectares of wetland, bushland and parkland in the middle, and Careniup Swamp holds the northern boundary against Karrinyup Road. Housing came in waves: market-garden cottages along North Beach Road and Erindale Road, brick-and-tile from the 1970s and 1980s after the Mitchell Freeway reached Karrinyup, and then the mid-1990s subdivisions of Karrinyup Waters and Settlers Green on drained parts of Careniup, where slab homes sit on filled, peaty ground with a high water table.
Yellow Karrakatta sand on the rises and dark reclaimed peat near the lakes. The peat holds moisture all year, so termite foraging never really stops around the lake margin, and paperbark and flooded gum in the reserves supply the colonies that pressure nearby houses. Careniup and Lake Gwelup are serious mosquito breeding wetlands from spring to early summer, and the reserve bushland keeps rats, native cockroaches and spiders moving into the adjoining streets. We treat Gwelup with the water table in mind: non-repellent termite systems placed to suit wet ground, and mosquito harbourage work that respects the reserve boundary.
