Balga was resumed by the State Housing Commission in the 1950s and built out through the 1960s. Camberwell Road still shows the uniform mid-1960s Commission homes: single-storey brick and tile, some with fibro sections, timber roof framing throughout, on sandy lots that were generous by today's standards. That generosity is why the suburb is now one of Perth's busiest infill areas, with original homes coming down for two or three slab-on-ground dwellings. The ground is Spearwood-type yellow sand with tuarts and grass trees, the balga the suburb is named for, still standing in the reserves. Sixty-year-old timber framing next door to a brand-new slab is the classic set-up for termite pressure moving between properties.
Princess Wallington Reserve is the heart of the suburb, with its aquatic centre, soccer fields and a bushwalk area of mature tuarts and grass trees, and the City of Stirling is expanding it into a larger community parkland. Wanneroo Road on the west, Reid Highway on the south, Beach Road on the north and Mirrabooka Avenue on the east box the suburb in, and the reserves and road verges between carry rodents, native cockroaches and spiders from one street to the next.
