Maylands developed from the 1890s along the railway and Guildford Road, and the streets between Railway Parade and the river still hold Federation and interwar homes with jarrah framing, timber floors on stumps and original weatherboard. More than a third of the suburb's dwellings are flats, from 1960s and 1970s brick walk-ups to the apartment buildings that have gone up around Maylands Station and the town centre in the last twenty years.
